I had a great bagel and cream cheese with coffee this morning at Acme General Store. That may not seem to be particularly interesting for most, but it was in fact a wonderful experience. A breakfast experience as good as any that I have ever had or at the very least, the best bagel breakfast experience.
While Jacob brewed my coffee, I had a conversation with a really sweet lady, who explained that when Fidel Castro seized power in 1958, she and her family fled Cuba for the United States. She vowed never to return to Havana until Castro was overthrown. Since then she has decided that the United States is the greatest country in the world. She described in great detail how our citizens generously give to every other country and receive so little in return. In America, she said, "with just a little hard work, you can make a good life". She has a sense of patriotism that is born from hardship rather than a birthright. In closing she warned "everyone better wake up, before it's too late".
We do live in the greatest country in the world and my favorite place to be a part of it, is in downtown Greer.
